Our intercropping system is now visibly balanced and thriving – a true living system taking shape on the ground.
Maize is performing strongly, with one cob per plant observed across most fields. Harvest is expected in approximately six weeks. Notably, maize planted after cowpeas is showing particularly vigorous growth, demonstrating the benefits of legume rotation and natural nitrogen enrichment.
Both white and red sorghum are establishing well, with uniform growth and healthy head development. Red sorghum, in particular, is showing impressive resilience and vigor under field conditions.
Cowpeas continue to stand out, providing strong vegetative growth, effective soil cover, and active nitrogen fixation. While early fruiting attracted attention from free-ranging chickens — a practical learning experience — protective measures are now in place to safeguard the next harvest.
Pigeon peas are now fully integrated into the system, planted between each moringa row with full germination achieved. Their deep root systems, nitrogen-fixing capacity, erosion control function, and long productive lifespan make them central to our long-term soil restoration strategy.
Biodiversity is steadily returning. Five new beehives have been installed, and as flowering crops expand, the site is becoming increasingly attractive to pollinators.
Ant populations are also increasing — an encouraging ecological indicator. As ecosystem engineers, ants aerate soil, improve water infiltration, redistribute organic matter, and enhance nutrient cycling. Their presence signals that soil structure and underground biodiversity are recovering.
Importantly, this season has been managed without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Only cow and chicken manure have been applied. Despite rising insect presence, the system is being allowed to stabilize naturally, strengthening ecological balance rather than imposing artificial control.
This land was once degraded and deforested.
Today, it is becoming a functioning regenerative ecosystem – step by step, season by season.
